Support Pathways

Created for the moment after “your child may be autistic.”

Not a diagnosis. Not medical advice. A calm place to orient yourself, understand your options, and keep your child’s growth moving while you wait for answers.

1

Navigate the Wait

Understand waitlists, evaluation types, questions to ask, and alternate routes parents may not be told about at the first appointment.

2

Start Support Early

Learn what supports can begin before a formal diagnosis, including speech, occupational therapy, early intervention, and school-based conversations.

3

Steady the Parent

Make room for the parent’s inner experience: fear, urgency, grief, love, confusion, and the need to act while still breathing.

Our Story

Mothering Matthew began with knowing something was different.

At 18 months old, Matthew was not speaking. His mother knew in her heart that something was wrong, even when she was told that boys can be delayed.

She stayed in the pediatrician’s office until someone listened. Eventually, she was told they could explore ASD, handed pamphlets and phone numbers, and sent into a system with 12 to 18 month waitlists.

That first moment should not feel like being dropped into the ocean without a map.

Mothering the Ocean is being built because families need immediate clarity, practical direction, and emotional support right after autism is first mentioned.

The goal is simple: help parents know what comes next, who to call, what choices they may have, and how to protect the good growth that can happen while they wait.

First steps

A calmer beginning, one step at a time.

The beginning can feel urgent and unclear. These are the kinds of tools Mothering the Ocean will organize for parents in one place.

Write down what you are seeing.

Track language, gestures, play, sensory needs, eating, sleep, regulation, transitions, and communication attempts.

Ask for specific referrals.

Ask about developmental pediatrics, pediatric neuropsychology, early intervention, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and school district evaluations.

Call more than one place.

Wait times vary. Keep a tracker. Ask about cancellations, telehealth intakes, nearby cities, and whether a diagnosis is required to begin support.

Do not forget yourself.

A parent’s nervous system matters. You need language, reassurance, and a place to put the fear while you keep moving forward.

The child is the ocean.

Not a puzzle to solve. Not a problem to fix. A whole world to understand: deep, specific, powerful, sensitive, beautiful, and worthy of careful navigation.

FAQs

Questions parents ask first.

Is this a medical or diagnostic service?

No. Mothering the Ocean is an informational and emotional support resource. It is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

Who is this for?

Parents and caregivers in the early stage: noticing differences, waiting for evaluation, newly diagnosed, or unsure how to begin.

Why “the ocean”?

Because autism is not a puzzle to solve. The metaphor creates a more compassionate way to understand depth, difference, sensitivity, movement, and growth.

What will launch first?

The first planned resource is a parent-first guide for the beginning: what to do, who to call, what to track, and how to stay grounded.
